I tried this as a last resort and now my hair is light, warm-brown color. Which is still not matched to the natural, but a lot closer than what it was and much softer against the regrowth. It's not patchy, and it looks pretty good in natural light too, and it's gotten rid of the cheap-dye glossiness (not sure what that's called). I could probably leave it this way, but I will probably tone it with a very light green base to neutralize the warmth.
