EAST. Card number 26 Squirrel—Gathering. The medicine wheel is an ancient paradigm of the unity of the cosmos, holding ancient wisdom handed down to us from Native America. The East color is yellow on the medicine wheel–sun and fires of the heart are in the East. East is the beginning of our sacred journey and we have this opportunity each morning—the possibility of walking on the red road of spirit. We have entered into October country now late into the year. It is a witchy time, October—a time of magic, the time of colorful and beautiful leaves falling from trees, a time of transition into winter. Squirrel has a great understanding and knowledge of trees. Consider the tree—often called a standing person in Native America. The tree is rooted deep in the Mother Earth and there are more roots than branches. Trees are lofty and stretch high into the Father Sky. The tree was once an important communication device. If you could imagine a person’s image and give it to a tree it would reach that person and they would know you were thinking about them. Every single tree is connected energetically to all other trees. Using teachings from the Choctaw, Lakota, Seneca, Aztec, Yaqui, Cheyenne, Cherokee, Iroquois, and Mayan traditions, the authors have identified the medicine of 44 animals that have traditionally been considered as guides. How do you read an animal medicine card? We ask for the powers of Swan so that we may gracefully and peacefully glide through whatever challenges we face.

Originally, Hawk Medicine was a sacred ceremony where the healer and the patient (most often an elder) share their medicine, usually given to the patient in a medicine bundle. Also, until enough time has passed to dissolve any negative effect (generally on the full moon, as one would expect). What is Fox medicine? NORTH. Card Number 38. Frog—Cleansing. Elders traditionally stand in the North. The North season is winter. The North color is white. The North represents intellect and wisdom. Burn sweetgrass in the North to celebrate elders or perhaps your own elder years. Frog in the North tells you to think about Cleansing and then act accordingly. Clean up your act. If you have the opportunity do a traditional sweat lodge, a Cleansing of the body, or do a traditional vision quest–the seeking of self-empowerment and purpose through vision, a Cleansing of the mind. Frog is a healer and a shaman. Frog’s power song is said to bring the Cleansing rain. Frog medicine can help you sort out your emotions. Emotions are related to the water element. Deepest healing happens on the emotional plains. If you are discouraged and have resentment, ask Frog to help you. Take those two debilitating emotions to the water and scrub them away.

SOUTH. Card Number 12, Porcupine—Innocence. Happy and slow-going Porcupine has appeared in the South—the summertime of life. South is also the place of trust and Innocence on the medicine wheel making Porcupine feel completely at home there. One could even say that Porcupine is emblematic of the South. Be open to Porcupine medicine. Porcupine are gentle and Innocent creatures telling you not to be hidebound or strict in your thinking. Trust your instincts. Use your imagination. Explore your environment. Have fun. Consider the world to be your playground. Let your inner child rule instead of the stern old adult. South is the direction of growth and discovery so don’t worry. Be happy. Take joy in each moment. Take joy in little things. Have no fear. Be like Porcupine knowing you are protected physically and spiritually. Brother and sister Porcupine’s message is one of remembering and reconnecting with your Innocence, your child self–pursuing your hopes and dreams openly and without guile. Now that it has been revised and expanded to include eight additional cards, this unique and powerful prophecy draws attention to the ancient wisdom and tradition of teaching medicine to cure the animal.

The HC1 form is also available from Jobcentre Plus offices or most NHS hospitals. You might also be able to get an HC1 form from your doctor, dentist or opticians. Once, I read a post by Jamie Sams, author of the popular blog, describing a new card game called Medicine Card. We ask for Badger energy when we must stand our ground and speak up for ourselves in a timely manner.

The Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams and friends are a collection of cards that can help a person heal. My problem with animal symbolism is that I feel so cut off from animals as a day to day part of my life that the book has to do a really good job grounding the symbolism of the animal. I feel like this book needs a whole book of native myths of the animals to get that job done. Which it doesn't have, of course. The beginning chapters also seem very minimalist and suffer for it, though it looks like her book Earthways might fill in some gaps. Animismis a type of Native American religion that believes in spirits and the deceased’s soul. They think that everything has a soul and that all of nature is inhabited by spirits.
