Review summary: Although the set is slightly too expensive, the tester is very impressed and very happy. I would love to get extras or different colors for some of the city figures I have wandering around my modulars.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved space stuff, but my Sci-Fi love was pretty limited to Star Wars and Star Trek… otherwise most of the stuff I built was actual rockets or space shuttle stuff. The top view is definitely the best – underneath there are a few of those blocky Technic frames on show, which could do with a few inverted slopes to cover them up. It was interesting to see a pulley wheel - that funny little wheel centre that's used on wheelbarrows - get utilised for its ability to do a 180° stud reversal at one point, which may be a helpful new technique for some. The top-down view of this set bears a particular resemblance to the red shuttle from the Classic Space logo itself!

The scratched up logo on his chest is in worse shape than anything from my childhood collection, and I’m not sure I can see myself using it in a creation. Who knows how much life LEGO is going to get from the Movie sets… we got a few this year but there’s nothing else on the horizon. The cavity gets topped with a folding 6X6 webbed radar dish (Element ID 4211487 4285); a part that just screams Classic Space. I can see evidence of some discussions but can't quite figure out how to browse all discussions, and tellingly, the most popular topic in the Space discussion seems to be a topic with only two replies insisting that the site isn't dead.

In the instructions and set inventory, the printing is shown as 'MA-XXXXXXXX', so I assume the characters are chosen at random at the time of printing, effectively making each set unique. For the entire fight with the ship, MetalBeard was a passenger sitting on the back and smacking around robots with laser sharks or cannonballs or something. It's a nice decal, but it decided it would immediately attach itself at a kooky angle, and removing it to reposition left half of the adhesive behind. Later on, when the Lego World started their battle against Lord Business' plan to kraglize everything with the Kragle, Benny finally gets his chance to build his spaceship. Firstly, the wedge-shaped profile is most apparent from this angle: the rise from the skinny nose to the bulky tail is quite dramatic, and the angle perfectly extends the rake of the cockpit canopy.

There are a lot of new elements used throughout the ship, though I don’t think most are exclusive to the set. I'm not quite sure how to feel about Astro-Kitty having a Classic Space cutie mark on just one side. Benny is a must and with his aforementioned cracked helmet and scratched chest logo he's everything you'd want him to be.Space builders are going to want to pick up a few copies of this set, which is sure to kick of a new frenzy of Neo Classic Space creations. Benny's Spaceship definitely references this by having yellow as the main colour chosen for "filler bricks" on the interior of the model, and in a couple of points on the exterior. That’s probably why Benny was such a wonderful character in the LEGO movie, since he hit that little fusion between kid’s love him (“SPACESHIP! So something like Benny’s Spaceship was an interesting build, but not one based on nostalgia or reliving my childhood collection (that’s what modular buildings and castle are for). Anyone who has played either of those games may not unable to get that thought out of their brain until they fit one together.
