Description

The leaves are 5–45cm (2– 17 + 3⁄ 4in) long and 1–10cm ( 1⁄ 2–4in) wide, and are oblanceolate, oblong, or obovate in shape, with the bases gradually narrowing to the petiole. The leaf margins are typically shallowly lobed to deeply lobed and often lacerate or toothed with sharp or dull teeth. [14] the Garden Tiger moth used to be common in gardens – now it’s rarely seen. It’s ‘caterpillar’ eats Dandelions. (Photo credit Temple of Mara Creative Commons) Where dandelions areout of control in a garden or are simply growing in the wrong place, control may be necessary.First, consider whether this can be done using non-chemical means such as digging out and where thesemethods arenot feasible, chemical controls may need to be used. The Latin specific epithet officinale refers to the Latin word for 'medicinal' or 'of the apothecaries'. [37] Van Der Kooi, C. J.; Pen, I.; Staal, M.; Stavenga, D. G.; Elzenga, J. T. M. (2015). The traditional aspects of the dandelion may be widely disregarded these days, but the future holds some intriguing possibilities totally unconnected with tradition. The ‘milk’ – seen when the stem or root is snapped – has been identified as a latex sap with natural characteristics similar to conventional rubber and scientists in Germany are convinced of its potential. These European dandelions can be divided into two groups. The first group reproduces sexually, as do most seed plants. This group consists of dandelions that have a diploid set of chromosomes, and are sexually self-incompatible. Sexual reproduction involves a reduction of the somatic chromosome number by meiosis followed by a restoration of the somatic chromosome number by fertilization. Diploid dandelions have eight pairs of chromosomes, and meiosis is regular with normal pairing of homologous chromosomes at the metaphase I stage of meiosis. [35] wait for then to arrive and then do not spray them – start by not cutting your lawn and see what comes up. It might be a lot more than just dandelions – daisies, clover and other wildflowers may also spring up when they get the chance. Vít Bojňanský; Agáta Fargašová (2007). Herbal remedies made from dandelions have been discovered on clay tablets in ancient Egypt and Greece.

Try digging out isolated specimens, removing as much of the tap root as possible early in the spring. Dandelions can regenerate from fragments of root so it may require several attempts to completely remove a deep or awkwardly positioned plant. There are many specially designed tools to help with removal. Dig plants out as soon as they appear and don’t allow to flower and set seed. Weedkillercontrol Two of them have been introduced and established in Alaska and the third (subsp. ceratophorum) is native there. [34] European dandelions [ edit ] send us your photos of bees or other insects on dandelions (and don’t forget to say where they are from) – or share them on our social media The common dandelion grows in temperate regions of the world in areas with moist soils. They are very hardy plants, able to grow in a variety of environments, and are tolerant of crowding, extremes of temperature, and low moisture. [12] As a result of this hardiness, in addition to its ability to rapidly propagate itself, the dandelion has become established over a wide range via human activity, originally being native to Eurasia, but can also be found across the Americas, southern Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand as a result of incidental or deliberate introductions. Taraxacum officinale subsp. vulgare (Lam.) Schinz & R. Keller, which is commonly called common dandelion.

Taraxacum officinale L. (dandelion) is a vigorous weed in Europe with diploid sexual populations in the southern regions and partially overlapping populations of diploid sexuals and triploid or tetraploid apomicts in the central and northern regions. And through my encounter with the dandelion I feel more intimate with its wispy nature. Perhaps through poetry I could come to know nature better. Now, I wonder if it’s possible to screen-print a cloud?

Glyphosate is a non-selective weedkiller applied to the foliage, where it is translocated throughout the weed. Tougher formulations are worth trying (e.g. Roundup Ultra or Rootblast Super Strength TotalWeedkiller) Taraxacum is derived from the Arabic word tarakhshagog (or tarakhshaqūn) for a bitter herb. [36] It may be related to the Greek word ταρασσω ( tarasso) meaning to disturb. [36] [ verification needed] Vorobyev, G.; Alyabyev, A.; Ogorodnikova, T.; Khamidullin, A.; Vorobyev, V. In October 2013, working with plant specialist bodies and tyre giant Continental, the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology, a huge research organisation with nearly 70 centres in Germany, launched a five-year programme to investigate whether latex derived from the dandelion might have a commercial application. It was found that Taraxacum kok-saghyz, a variety found in Russia, offered the best high-yield roots. Clare, B. A.; Conroy, R. S.; Spelman, K. (2009). A wide range of insects love the Dandelion for its super-abundant nectar (it’s flowers are edible to humans and are said to taste of honey) and if you grow Dandelions in your garden you will be helping bumble and other sorts of bees, butterflies, moths, other insects and birds. Please join our campaign to celebrate and encourage Dandelions to make our gardens a haven for nature.
