I remember my sister and I being very squeamish toward sexual content in our early teens, not because we were taught it was wrong, but because it was just so foreign to us. From the author of the bestselling short story collection Love in Colour comes this funny and charming debut novel, a university romcom geared towards young adult readers who like a touch of snark with their love stories. One last thing I wanted to touch on (since it’s pretty relevant to me and my work) is how spice/no spice translates over to the young adult genre.

The same platforms that allow us to connect with people who share our interests also allow us to disparage those who do not. In that regard, Spice and Wolf by Isuna Hasekura and illustrated by Jyuu Ayakura is a completed romance story. Lawrence and Holo remain strong enough characters that they can carry the later books, despite adding nothing new. Because the other tricky part is that some teenagers are ready for/can handle/are allowed to read more explicit content than others. One ill-informed business decision, though, leaves him teetering on the brink of bankruptcy and ruin! The story often drifts into a heavily Americanised snap’n’sass sitcom register, which sits oddly with its UK redbrick university setting, while the general descriptions, reported actions and exchanges between characters can be strained and clunky. But before I get into it, I want to make one thing abundantly clear: I am not here to throw stones or finger-point a specific group, because neither side of this debate is entirely at fault. Told in the voice of a girl as she moves from childhood into adolescence, Buxton Spice is the story the town of Tamarind Grove: its eccentric families, its sweeping joys, and its sudden tragedies.

In some cases, the local authority may decide that they cannot do so but will let you know this and explain why. On a side note however they should definitely have the VAs continuously read their respective characters.Continuing the trend of my last two posts being about romances, this week’s post is another romance! It’s not that books that are primarily focused on the spicy aspects can’t be well-written and well-developed, have compelling plots and characters, all that good stuff, but… those elements are often secondary to the main driving force of the story: the romance.

Turns out this girl, Holo, has wolf ears and a wolf tail since she is actually the harvest goddess of a village that grows wheat. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It’s easy to get bitter, which is another problem I see with spice vs no spice: non-spicy authors in particular tend to get bitter toward their spicy counterparts. As Kiki confesses to Malakai: “You’re the only guy who’s ever held my hand without the intention of getting something from me. Kane Sullivan teaches human sexuality at the nearby college, where coeds are clamoring for seats in his lectures.
