Nominated for ten UK book awards, Theresa Breslin's hit novel tells of how two young boys - one Rangers fan, one Celtic fan - are drawn into a secret pact to help a young asylum seeker in a city divided by prejudice.

She is the recipient of the Carnegie Medal, Britain's most prestigious children's book award, for Whispers in the Graveyard, and her books for young people receive critical acclaim and appear regularly on children's book award short lists in the United Kingdom.

In those cities, the much celebrated urban revitalization has come at a cost: it has displaced countless long-time residents—especially people of color and those of limited means—who can no longer afford their newly gentrified neighborhoods.

I chose this book to review as part of Glasgow Women’s Library Mixing the Colours project because, although I have lived in Glasgow for some years, I felt I didn’t have a good understanding of the conflict between Protestants and Catholics. The novel is a great foundation to learn about the history of sectarianism and issues around the global migrant crisis and challenges faced by asylum seekers. Being a teenager in Glasgow in the early ninety's (ok a bit before this is set) I've seen old firm day violence, been in the city centre on dreaded orange walk days and remember what it was like when asylum seekers first arrived in the city and the author caught all aspects of that albeit a lighter side since the book is aimed at kids. I like the size and layout of the book; the fact that it feels like a script rather than a textbook. It will explore successful strategies to boost investment without displacing less affluent residents, spotlighting innovative strategies to preserve affordable housing, create jobs, and foster racial and income diversity. In The Divided City, Alan Mallach expertly charts the decline of America's industrial cities, and explores what has led to their unexpected, and at times unequal, resurgence. Why not allow anyone with a properly licensed, insured and inspected van to pick up passengers on street corners and take them where they want to go?

As these megaregions grow, we are at a pivotal moment where we can choose to create more meaningful, better connected designs. After his presentation a panel discussion took place with Jenny Durkan, Nancy Backus, Claudia Balducci.

He then proposes an interesting future vision for well-governed, resilient places that offer high quality of life and broad-based opportunity for all residents. That’s because much of the development in the Detroits, Baltimores, and Clevelands of the world have been highly concentrated in just a handful of lucky neighborhoods. Mallach makes a compelling case that these strategies must be local in addition to being concrete and focusing on people’s needs—education, jobs, housing and quality of life.
