First half of this omnibus contains some of the best Hulk storylines: part horror, part philosophical meditation, part smash everything in sight. Since breaking into American comics, he has written Jennifer Blood and spin-off series The Ninjettes for Dynamite Entertainment, and the Age of Ultron tie-in issues of Avengers Assemble for Marvel Comics. S.Avengers; and joined the writing team for the "No Surrender" storyline in Avengers, which brought the Hulk back from the dead. The pre-loved books are carefully cleaned and maintained offering a wide variety of general and specialist titles from children's to adults. There are unanswered questions, and ties to nighttime and whatnot, but nothing genuinely scary to speak of.

I'm not sure exactly how I feel about the directions he's taking the Hulk family but I'll read the entire run and see where it goes. Unfortunately, those first five issues were deceptively good, because the story never reached those same highs in the following 10 issues. Read the entire Immortal Hulk and despite knowing absolutely nothing about Hulk (aside from the fact that he's green and angry) I definitely enjoyed it. Sure, the fact that God doesn’t explain himself to Hulk echoes the final confrontation between Job and Jehovah, where Jehovah declares that he doesn’t have to explain jackshit to Job about why his life has turned to shit. It’s obnoxious but, to be honest, not altogether unwarranted; given the demands of regular(ish) publishing schedules, many runs with a single author, telling a unified story, are nonetheless drawn by a rotating roster of artists. My reaction to the denouement this second time around was no doubt coloured by a piece I’d just read by Freddie deBoer, titled “Please Stop Having Your Characters Just State the Themes of Your Show or Movie to the Audience, Thanks”, which argues exactly what it sounds like it’d argue. If you grew up on the 70s TV series then you’ll recognise much of the angst and loneliness that “being” Hulk means.

You’d think the MC’s publicly announced intention to destroy the world would still be a big deal even if it was 20 issues ago, right? Aside from the overwhelming sense of déjà vu all over again, the whole thing eventually collapses under the weight of its preposterous, made-up metaphysics. I want to read more of this series, for I have heard from some reviews that the quality dips, but in this volume I noticed nothing of the sort—but my collection stretches from the first issue to the tenth, so I am missing one-third of the total amount. And it put Doc Samson in place as Hulk’s mental health support, and ran a lengthy sub-plot involving a damaged version of Betty Ross. There are plenty of additional plot lines to keep you interested too: good to see Alpha Flight, Avengers etc all used properly.

Which I don’t have a problem with, but it leaches any real stakes from those scenes because there’s no rules to those mental/dream universes, so any terrible life-threatening fate in one can just be wished away in the next, and indeed they often are. However, as the arc progresses, particularly into the second half, I felt that I was at a disadvantage having never read a Hulk comic before. This one I really like though, with the supernatural element making the big green'un scary again in a way he's not been since the 1960's.
