The interior was even more churchlike: velvet wall hangings depicting Jesus and his adventures decorated the entrance hall; the benches filled with lounging brownshirts looked like pews. Ellroy’s story is about detective Dwight "Bucky" Bleichert, and his partner, Lee Blanchard, who both are led to drugs and madness and criminal excess themselves in the process of investigating this crime. I only got to page 104, I kept trying to read this book, but i was pretty much forcing myself, waiting for it to get less annoying. But both are obsessed with the Dahlia—driven by dark needs to know everything about her past, to capture her killer, to possess the woman even in death. One line of enquiry leads Bucky to Madeleine Sprague, a spoiled socialite who closely resembles Short and was also a lesbian lover of hers. I have decided that much like my relationship to self and my place in this world, I loved, loathed, accepted, and came to an understanding with this literary masterpiece. She bitches a lot about it in the book, but she never actually bitches about it to the people who deserve a verbal smackdown.I was expecting certain things from this novel: a smart-ass protagonist, contemporary cultural references, dark humor, and maybe some cheesy Life Lessons since it's about terminal illness. By contrast, Lee is outgoing and jovial, and already famous for catching the notorious bank robber Bobby De Witt. Also for the novice to avoid disappointment, the experienced grower who just wants to do a little bit better and those who just like a good read about the wonderful world of the dahlia. Honestly, the only thing I can think of to complain about is that Blanchard and Bleichert's names are too similar. The reader is almost dared to grant Dahlia the modicum of concern that her humanity might deserve by rubbing the reader’s face in her unlovable qualities. However, because Dahlia is the narrator (at least, this is what I felt when reading the book) we're left to question the authenticity of the narrative.The delicate but straightforward descriptions of each and every dahlia in this amazing book by master grower and chronicler Erin Benzakein made me pause. Blanchard lost his sister and wants to solve the murder to in part deal with his rage and guilt over her loss; Bucky eventually also gets similarly obsessed with the case, and in the process gets involved with a woman who looks like Short who had a short affair with her. In exchange for Bucky suppressing evidence about her involvement with Short, Madeleine has sex with him, causing him to fantasize that she is Short.
