It makes me laugh that only now, when I had a top five album with my last album as well, there’s been quite a lot of attention and people ask about longevity and how to stay in the industry. Elsewhere there are some jaunty songs which give a sense of what went wrong particularly Cocaine with its list hook: ‘I just wish you loved me more than Cocaine, red wine, late nights and good times, fast cars, pink pills, Mary Jane and cheap thrills. My family are all Scottish, and there’s strong binds between England, Ireland, Scotland – so it just came out sounding quite like, almost, tribal.

God is in the TV is an online music and culture fanzine founded in Cardiff by the editor Bill Cummings in 2003. It’s something [the working diagnosis] I’ve come away from, and I’m looking into all the other traits that I have. There was a period of time where I didn’t enjoy music or the music industry, so I consider it a real privilege to still be here and to be able to step back and realise why I wasn’t enjoying it. We interviewed Spraggan in 2021 as last album Choices was about to chart at her highest ever position (5) and she said of fellow 2012 X Factor cast member Ella Henderson who was charting with Tom Grennan duet Let’s Go Home Together which couldn’t be further in tone from Lucy’s own Sober: ‘It’s a great song.

When asked what memory or song she feels such a deep connection to, Spraggan immediately brings up Emily Sandé’s “Read All About It”, a song she had to sing during the X Factor UK. Since her appearance on X Factor, Lucy has sold over 140k albums and reached over 140 million streams on Spotify alone with over 540k monthly listeners. It’s rare for me to comment in music on something that I’m not directly involved in,” Spraggan explains carefully. A decade since shooting to fame on the X Factor as the first contestant to perform an original song, Lucy Spraggan is having a busy year.

We carry a broad range of CDs and vinyl (7”/12” singles and LPs) and specialise in indie, alternative, rock, punk, metal plus a few other genres. Laced with the honesty and authenticity that sets her work aside from that of other artists, Balance is definitely a record that she should be proud of. With her debut novel flying off the shelves and her seventh album storming the UK Album Chart, it’s safe to say that 2023 is Lucy’s year. Predictably, I’ve also gained more wisdom as I’ve gotten older as to who I am and what I want in life. Mainstream LGBT representation and visibility have certainly grown in the past decade, but there’s still a lot of work to be done and victories to be had.
