About this deal

Like traditional fairy tales, there’s a sense of shadow that lurks under the story of the tiger and the princess, but the moral of the story – about being free to be yourself – is an enduring one. Funny, surreal and occasionally a little bit scary, Cinnamon is everything I enjoy in a picture book…Of course, of course, of course - recommended. If the tiger had transformed, too - if the beautiful blind girl had as much impact on the wild creature as he had on her - maybe it would have impressed me more. A mighty fable from Neil Gaiman, winner of the Newbery and Carnegie Medals, illustrated in vivid colour by up-and-coming talent Divya Srinivasan. It’s laid out in what I take to be (near to) traditional Indian style, with large scale landscapes in fairly 2D format.

He posted the story/link somewhen last year and I was delighted upon seeing the great illustration you see here as the cover (that is also the reason why I marked this edition as the one I've read although that's not true either since this is an audiobook apparently and I read the text itself). Then a tiger turns up, announcing he can get the princess to speak, and the girl's parents agree that this self-confessed man-eater should try. When he leaves for adventure, he finds three talking animals that are actually gods - and they need his help.I have an autistic son of 22 who does not talk and we have tried many things to get him to talk, but I have yet to try what these parents tried, which is to put the girl in the same room for a night with a (talking) Bengal tiger. Her concerned parents offered a room in the palace, a field of stunted mango trees and a portrait of the Rani's aunt to anyone who could make her talk. Cinnamon Press is the fastest growing small press in Wales, publishing about twenty-five titles a year in fiction, poetry and occasional non-fiction. NEIL GAIMAN is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels 'Neverwhere', 'Stardust', the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning 'American Gods', 'Anansi Boys', and 'Good Omens' (with Terry Pratchett), as well as the short story collections 'Smoke and Mirrors' and 'Fragile Things'. It's something that I think would be very fun to dissect for themes and morals and such, but it's also something I would read to my (hypothetical) children just for the enjoyment of the story.

It is primarily the story of a girl who overcomes adversity and finds strength in an unusual friendship, but is told with a huge amount of wit and humour. Her fabrics and clothing are sumptuous, her tiger fiercely regal, and the palace and jungle strongly evoke the wild, beautiful setting, ensuring that readers are taken on a very satisfying journey. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. This stunning picture book will transport readers to another time and place and will delight parents and children alike. Blind and mute Princess Cinnamon is the despair of her parents who make offerings to anyone who can make her speak. Neil Gaiman is the author of the bestselling National Book Awards 2013 Book of the Year The Ocean at the End of the Lane and the Carnegie Medal winning The Graveyard Book, as well as Coraline, Neverwhere, the essay collection The View from the Cheap Seats and The Sandman series of graphic novels, among many other works.
