My Mother’s Hymn Book contains 15 gospel standards and Best of Cash On American as the title suggests offers a 15-song selection of highlights from Cash’s first four albums with Rubin. Those who bought the recent vinyl box set of American I-VI have every right to be upset that Unearthed wasn't included.

For example, there's an incredible version of The Devil's Right Hand, a song recorded by the Highwaymen in the mid-90s, but Cash's sparse version, accompanied only by an electric guitar, is by far the superior performance. The quality of these outtakes are just as good as the material that was originally released on the American Recording albums. It's true that there is no ground breaking version of a contemporary song, no fresh triumph like ''The Mercy Seat'' or ''Hurt''. Particularly on the first CD, starting with a powerful performance of ''Long Black Veil'' this feels like a one man journey through the history of American song.

The Unearthed vinyl box features a pair of cloth-bound books housed in an LP-sized black cloth slipcase. Over the course of five mesmerising CDs, Unearthed shows us just how Johnny Cash's now-legendary handful of recordings for American Records came to be. It's hard to think of a more appropriate and impressive send-off for this one-of-a-kind American original than the massive musical statement that is Unearthed. The deluxe packaging includes a 104-page, cloth-bound book; never-before-seen photographs; and Cash's personal commentary on every song in the box.

Unearthed was originally released as a CD box set by producer Rick Rubin’s American Recordings in November 2003, two months after the country superstar’s passing. Yes, I know the set was actually compiled while Cash was still alive, and the booklet features his comments about the tracks, but while some performances are clearly rough and unfinished, others frankly deserved to be included on any of the four American-series CDs released before Cash died.A really nice box set, but it's a shame that they really missed the care about the records production. This set claims to have all unreleased recordings when Rubin took Cash under his wing (except disc 5 which is a compilation of the most known tracks from the A. With each track being essential listening, there is refreshingly no filler material to pad out the collection. Redemption Songs is largely acoustic, and features duets with Joe Strummer, Fiona Apple, Nick Cave and Glen Campbell.

Versions of Down the Line, I'm Movin' On and Carl Perkins' Everybody Wants to Be My Baby should have seen the light of day long before this set. Comes with a very handy, entertaining and interesting little book; quite informative and full of cool facts from that era. Several other songs, such as track 13, had been performed by Cash on TV or live in concert, but formal studio recordings had not yet been issued until now. John enjoyed a much deserved critical renaissance in latter years being courted by the likes of Bono and Nick Cave, and this fusion of modern songwriting influences and the true Country story-teller roots of JC's work make this a five star box set.The first three discs feature outtakes and alternate versions of songs recorded for American Recordings, American II: Unchained, American III: Solitary Man and American IV: The Man Comes Around.
