About this deal

Clare Mackintosh is the multi-award-winning author of New York Times bestseller I LET YOU GO, and Sunday Times bestsellers I SEE YOU, LET ME LIE, AFTER THE END, HOSTAGE, THE LAST PARTY and A GAME OF LIES. She spent twelve years on the police force in England and has written for the Guardian, Good Housekeeping , and other publications. They have a fight on the cliff tops and "unfortunately" Ian slips and falls off the cliffs and down the 200ft drop into the sea.

The story starts out with a hit and run accident and Jacob, a young child fresh out of school that day, is killed. Ray is pretty useless and his perspective is mostly him flirting blandly with another police officer while his poor wife looks after the kids. And then the bad guy(in this case the abusive husband,Ian) comes back and gives the protagonist,Jenna one last beating. It's the most personal book I've written, and I've loved hearing from readers who have connected with it. It had all been so rushed, so frightening, so unlike the books I had devoured during my pregnancy, but the love I had to offer never faltered. The opening to this book is a gut wrenching one, as the reader becomes the witness to a heartless hit and run accident.

She runs away - goes off grid - throws her cell phone away -hides out- - 'less' that 3 months after her child is killed. After an arrest, a trial, new information revealed and slowly, the big picture shimmers and changes. Passing cars send spray over their shoes; the noise from the traffic making it impossible for her to hear more than a few words of the chattering update that began the moment the school gates opened.

You might think you know what's happening and how the characters are involved, but in reality, you have no clue. I found myself not totally engrossed until I reached "Part two", but once I hit that I couldn't put this down! From the reaction on Brian’s face, it was clear this was the last thing he wanted to do, but he stood up and left the room with Kate, no doubt to moan to her about CID pulling rank. Waiting for a break in the traffic they duck across the busy road, and she tightens her grip on the small hand inside the soft woolen glove, so he has to run to keep up. The case they have been assigned is of a young boy killed in a hit-and-run right in front of his mother.

Jenna has an innocent conversation with the receptionist, Ian sees this as Jenna flirting and a reason to shout at her, belittle her and ultimately hit her. These characters offer the reader an alternative perspective of what it is like to work behind the scenes of a hit and run, sadly involving a small child. It happens in a heartbeat; the feeling of space by her side as he runs toward home, seeking out the warmth of the hall, with its porch-light glow.

I did have a few issues with a couple of lead characters, but since no one is mentioning that part of the story, I won’t either. The reader is presented with various perspectives on the book’s central crime: a hit and run accident where a young boy is killed, and the driver never stops to help. We are also given the POV from Ray, who is the detective investigating the incident is having family problems and also has a crush on his colleague Kate. And I broke down al that just happened and how it all got flipped on its head right there at the end of Part I.
