The publishers of Janus have latterly claimed that it was established by a spanking enthusiast named Gordon Sergeant, although whether he ever really existed is doubtful. The name may simply have served as an editorial pseudonym; it appeared in the masthead of later spin-off magazines such as Gordon Sergeant's Privilege Plus. The shop assistant was indeed a W.I. member, and knew the women in the village. Mummy knew that it would soon be common knowledge that she was now armed.

Karen liked the strange feeling she felt (in a certain in a certain intimate area) at being exposed. Without doubt there would be a degree of jealousy from some with troublesome daughters too, and even though she would never admit it, that gave her satisfaction too! I get my manhood in my hand, and stroke as I listen. It was the end of an era in more ways than one because Van, who had been very ill for some time, sadly passed away. As photo editor and producer of Janus films the legendary George Harrison-Marks (below) had been supporting Van to edit the magazine during his illness and was the natural choice to take over after his death. The editorial for Volume 9, Number 12 tells readers to look out for Volume 10 Number 1 but it wasn’t to be… As access to spanking related material became increasingly more easily available online the Janus publication schedule slowed down with only 4 to 6 new issues being produced each year. When Janus 167 was published in 2007 there was no indication at the time that this was to be the final issue. Despite an excellent re-launch in Janus 161 the magazine had reached the end of its natural life. The Internet had finally seen off the longest running spanking magazine in the world. boss leapt on this and said that I had acted terribly and that clearly I should be punished. His tone reminded me of years ago when he expressed dissatisfaction with my actions when I worked for him. He told me that I should expect to be punished and that I should be at his house on Saturday morning at 11.00hrs – adding that I should be under no illusions about the seriousness of my actions and that I should expect to receive a ‘classic caning’.

The magazine was published in yearly volumes of twelve monthly issues but in 1973 Janus published three specials. The first focussed on bondage, rubber and leather fetishism, the second on spanking (below) and the third on fetishism beneath the skirt. The editorial team were overwhelmed with the response to the spanking special and published a further three spanking specials that same year. Janus – the longest running spanking magazine in the world and featuring a large collection of vintage spanking pictures from the 1970s, 80s and 90s. giving me a proper six-of-the-best as he had promised. Karen took out the envelope containing the slip….the slip…the white crispy slip, the DETENTION SLIP, and walked gingerly by the stairs and into the kitchen. “Hello Mum. I got this today.” Great to see so many others with happy memories of Janus. I first came across a copy in a newsagent in Islington in the early 70’s. I still remember the front cover with a “schoolgirl” bent over with skirt turned up clearly ready for punishment. I became a regular visitor to both Green’s Court and Old Compton Street, the shop usually was fairly busy with fellow devotees browsing and deciding which issues to buy. I still have many of the early “Volume” and “numbered” series and the quality is excellent. Like several contributors I also found the readers’ letters very enjoyable. While one can now relax at home browsing through spanking material on the internet and even chatting to fellow enthusiasts, it doesn’t have the same buzz as a visit to the shop. Happy days.”
