For no apparent reason, Vortex did not appear alongside the other Combaticons in IDW Publishing's 2012- 2014 "season 1" of the Robots in Disguise comic series. The others did, redesigned as many series characters were after concept art for their counterparts in the War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron console games. Vortex finally returned to IDW continuity in 2015's Windblade vol. 2 #7, having the Generation 1 body but in his Fall of Cybertron color scheme. This would be revised in the next year's Till All Are One #1 to the team being unified as stylised drawings of Combiner Wars toy designs.
