About this deal

The ingredients and flavors come together nicely, and if it wouldn't state so prominently that this is a Bathtub Gin, you probably would not notice. The thing with Bathtub Gin is that you make it exclusively by adding botanicals AFTER distillation to a cheap. Producers add them to a cheap grain of alcohol and let them infuse for a while.

Winner of the Great British Food Awards 2020 and Gold in the World Gin Awards 2020 and the Gin Masters. An easy way to avoid cheaply produced Gins is by looking at the label. If it says something like Distilled Gin, Dry Gin, or London Dry Gin, it cannot be a Compound Gin. Add Juniper berries, Coriander Seeds, and Angelica root in the jar with the vodka. Swirl around to mix. Step 4 Bajes Too different for me I love a crisp G & T, but not keen on the liquorice and cinnamon flavours of this gin. Much prefer the grapefruit gin.

And while it’s not uncommon for Old Tom gins to be aged, it’s not necessary. And while it’s not uncommon for Old Tom Gins to have sugar added, it’s not necessary. Hence the head-scratching. If the tub wasn't used by moonshiners as a vessel for macerating or infusing with botanicals, it sure was used as a way to store larger amounts of spirit. This way, they could store their moonshine until they were ready to bottle the liquor. Bathtub Gin vs. Other Gin Types The term Bathtub Gin is tightly linked to the prohibition era and first came up in the US in the 1920s as a synonym for gin of poor quality made under amateur conditions.

Nowadays, bathtub gin is made and sold for cultural nostalgia and for a fun cooking project. You can still make one at home or buy a commercial brand that manufactures it as a specialty spirit. OLD TOM - Boatyard Old Tom gin is naturally sweetened; we take our Double Gin and age it in first fill PX sherry barrels for 4 month. We then add a touch of local Fermanagh honey for natural sweetnessIn general, Bathtub Gin is considered inferior to other gin types. That doesn't mean all brands or bottles of Bathtub or Compound Gin are bad, but the overall quality of this gin style is not as good.

The Old Tom Gin in the Ableforth series is quite an interesting proposition too. It is almost the very definition of what an Old Tom style gin should be. Sweet on the nose from the liquorice root, with a sugary mouth feel and a lingering finish. It has a slightly earthy warmth but the sugary element seems to bring out the citrusy, juniper note. While it seems to have less character than Hayman’s Old Tom when tasting the two side by side, it’s easier to see what an “ Old Tom” style gin is when tasting the professor’s. We would recommend it to any gin lover looking to find a bench mark for what Old Tom gin’s are all about. BATHTUB NAVY STRENGTH GIN TO TASTE… Original Bathtub Gin, compound, and cold compounded gin all mean the same: A gin flavored with botanicals macerated in a neutral grain spirit or by adding essences and extracts. During prohibition, many people tried to supply others with homemade liquor. People had no access to distilleries and had to produce their alcohol or moonshine at home secretly. Thankfully for Bathtub Gin, the quality of the ingredients are greatly superior. Here the gin is infused with six botanicals: juniper, coriander, orange peel, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom, and the length of the compounding period is controlled entirely by periodic sampling at the Master of Malt HQ in Tunbridge Wells. The final spirit is bottled at 43.3% ABV and has a slight hue caused by the infusion process. There are two types of bathtub gin, the historical kind which is how the name originated, and the contemporary take on this drink.Perditax Yummy Gin I bought this for my buddy because her two favourite things in life and I quote are "Cats and Gin" She loved it and said that she will keeping the bottle because it is so lovely. Fab pressie for a gin lover! While it began by being made in incredibly small quantities – between 30 and 60 bottles at a time - the popularity of the product grew to such an extent that Bathtub Gin is now made several hundred litres at a time in industrial IBC containers. Consequently, these often were of inferior quality, and one had to mask their harsh bite and unpleasant flavors.

A compound gin is the more modern and safe version of bathtub gin that also involves infusing berry and fruit essences in neutral grain spirits. Using pestle and mortar, grind together juniper berries, cardamom pod, and coriander seeds. Do not grind them to a pulp. Just enough to release flavor. Step 3 Prior to that lunch, we’d pretty much just been focusing on brandies and eau de vies,” Seestedt said. “I’d been thinking about trying my hand at a gin for while, and that was when David suggested an Old Tom.” Store for a few more days to a couple of weeks to let sediments settle and allow the flavor to mature. Step 8Justthetonic Bathtub gin I am trying lots of gins at the minute. I think I chose this one fir the cute bottle. Unfortunately this is nit to my taste and I don’t like this gin at all.
