Purposive sampling was used to select participants. The participants in this study included 20 nurses working in intensive care units. Subject selection was conducted with maximum variation in personal factors (age, education level, duration of work experience, and organizational role). The aim or purpose of study is formulated so researchers and readers have a clear understanding about what is being researched (Parahoo, 2014). Both articles have a clear-cut aim to look at in which pain is assessed for those patients who are unable to communicate in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting.Statement of the aim in both papers clearly outlines why the research is being carried out and states what will be done with the findings. The following are some of the characteristics of qualitative research: 1. Qualitative researchers collect field data at the locations where participants experience the problem or issue to be studied. Qualitative researchers do not change the environmental settings and activities of the participants. What is criticism of qualitative research? Ellis, P. (2013). Understanding Research for Nursing Students. 2 nd Ed. London: Learning Matters (SAGE).

Leach, M. J. (2006). Evidence‐based practice: A framework for clinical practice and research design. International Journal of Nursing Practice Vol.12 pp. 248-251.

Within quantitative research there are different approaches (methodologies). The example used throughout this series of giving the patient an experimental drug to treat hypertension and then measuring the patient’s blood pressure, may be set up in one of several ways. Researchers may ask GPs to record the patient’s blood pressure, before starting treatment and thereafter every month for a year, as well as recording the patient’s attitudes to taking the medication. This type of research is known as ‘survey research’, although the research may not necessarily take into consideration other factors such as the patient’s diet or exercise regime. Qualitative research ensures nurses are able to provide patients with the best EBP Fain (2017). Parahoo (2014) explains that qualitative research enables to understand each individuals’ experiences and also ensures to understand a patient’s own perspectives of the topic that is being researched. Galvin and Holloway (2017) also agree with parahoo as they explain that by using different approaches which may include group interviews or individual, this allows the researcher to speak to the individuals that are exploring thoughts and feelings and be able to engage with them. The qualitative paper Tacia et al (2015) will be discussed and critically appraised and this will be done by using Holland and Rees framework (2010). This framework will help to critically analysis the research article effectively. The article carries out a direct focus with a detailed title ‘’Identifying barriers to evidence-based practice adoption: A focus group study’’ (Tacia et al 2015). This makes It clear for the reader to understand what the article is about. Tecli et al (2015) aspire to understand the individuals outlook on the chosen topic while identifying any barriers, whilst understanding EBP. Parhoo (2014) explain that the aim of researcher is to also to be able to raise an understanding as to why the study is being developed and how relevant the chosen subject is this present day. Parhoo (2014) extend and state that the researcher has also to be able to identify any mistakes in practice and how these errors can be improved. The writer found that Tacli et al (2015) has not only outlined that main aim of the research but also outline the reason for the study and while doing so, identify how it is relevant to nurses. Some of the terminology that relates to qualitative and quantitative research and how these relate to different worldviews (paradigms) was introduced in the first article in this series. The notion of qualitative (non-numerical) and quantitative (numerical) data was also introduced. Readers of qualitative research need a sound understanding of the terminology specific to this type of research to make full sense of the report. The majority of research is never published even though it may have the potential to make a valuable contribution to the development of nursing knowledge. Caution should still be exercised as to whether published research is repetitive of previous research or conducted well - hence the reason for a critiquing framework - and adds to the body of nursing knowledge. What are the critiquing frameworks for qualitative research trying to do? Parahoo, K. (2014). Nursing Research – Principles, Process and Issues. 3 rd Ed. London: Palgrave Macmillan.

The first paper the writer critically appraised was Tacia et al (2015). This research paper identified 6 main barriers which was highlighted within the 3 focus groups that where used. The writer feels that they were well explained. Tacia et al (2015) research identifies the understanding of EBP and what the challenges where when nurses tried to implement EBP, however along with this there is also suggestions of how this could be improved. Nursing students require a unique guide to research and evidence based practice to help them succeed in both the classroom and the clinical area. While these implications can relate to the practice, education, research and management of nursing and midwifery, not all research reports detail the implications for all aspects of the professions. Indeed, the word allowance in many health journals will only allow for detailed discussion of a few implications. How qualitative research assists practitioners
