About this deal

The writing and plot were great in this book!! 🤩🤩 I really enjoy Brigid Kemmerer's writing- it has depth but at the same time it's so easy to read! Like, it's literally a political fantasy and yet it's so bingeable?! 🤭🤭 The plot was super interesting- lots of action, particularly at the end, which I really enjoyed. Even in the parts without action, it was still so interesting 🫶 This series does have a decent amount of politics but it isn't hard to understand *thankfully*. I really need to get better at figuring out what is a trilogy or a duology because, once again, I played myself thinking two books was it. I’d say the first part was definitely giving me stronger bridge-book vibes—it took a while for anything to get started—but I was much more invested in the second half, and by the time that ending rolled around (Gah! No! Why?!) I was ready to dive into the next book (if only…). I think the third book will move faster now that our characters have begun working on some of their biggest emotional challenges and it now feels like the stage is fully set. I appreciate how Kemmerer doesn’t demonize or sanctify anyone, and you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing with everyone at some point or another. Compromise is the name of the game. Lochlan also is on the ship alongside three guards as a goodwill of Harristan even though Lochlan thinks this is a trap to kill him and throw his corpse to the sea.

The plot, the romance, the main characters, the side characters, the world… just everything was sooooo well done!! The writing was also once again amazing! Brigid Kemmerer is a true genius. She just knows how to write incredible YA, fantasy books!! As the Moonflower supply in Kandala dwindles, a ship arrives with a trade opportunity in this follow-up to Defy the Night (2021).

The pretty teal color is very calming and reminiscent of the sea, which—surprise!—is where we’re heading, so I think it’s all very thematic and on-brand. if you or a loved one have had to deal with the emotional fallout from this cliffhanger you may be entitled to financial compensation Alright. I’m a bit bummed with this one, as I sadly didn’t enjoy it as much as Defy the Night, which I loved. I think part of this is due to the fact that some of the relational conflicts that arise between some of the characters felt really childish, pointless, and frustrating. The Plague has left a population divided between Elites and Ordinaries—those who have powers and those who don’t; now, an Ordinary teen fights for her life. Not much happens for the first half of this book. The end is eventful but not enough to make me bump it up a star.

Defend the Dawn tells us a story about the betrayal that the Crown’s facing. We finally get to see from Harristan’s POV. While, I’m delighted to see the way he’s thinking, I wish that the author dig deeper into his personality. Defy the Night was one of my favorite YA reads of 2022, so I was super excited to read Defend the Dawn this year, unfortunately though... this was just nowhere near how good Defy the Night was.And what were all those boring chapters in Harristan’s POV? They were totally random and sooo boring. This was just absolutely EVERYTHING!!! I just loved each and every second I was reading this book! Literally flew through it like it was nothing! It was addicting, captivating and interesting throughout it all!! This series deserves so much more hype! I don’t get how people aren’t gushing about it on booktok?!?! Like it’s AMAZING!!! In the first installment i had no issue with her whatsoever . She seemed useful and like an asset. In this book she comes off as a liability who is naïve ,annoying & continues to think everything is about her when people are literally dying. stars because it was super enjoyable for no reason (i.e. there wasn’t even a plot). Happy reading! 💛✨ In a time of typewriters and steam engines, Iris Winnow awaits word from her older brother, who has enlisted on the side of Enva the Skyward goddess. Alcohol abuse led to her mother’s losing her job, and Iris has dropped out of school and found work utilizing her writing skills at the Oath Gazette. Hiding the stress of her home issues behind a brave face, Iris competes for valuable assignments that may one day earn her the coveted columnist position. Her rival for the job is handsome and wealthy Roman Kitt, whose prose entrances her so much she avoids reading his articles. At home, she writes cathartic letters to her brother, never posting them but instead placing them in her wardrobe, where they vanish overnight. One day Iris receives a reply, which, along with other events, pushes her to make dramatic life decisions. Magic plays a quiet role in this story, and readers may for a time forget there is anything supernatural going on. This is more of a wartime tale of broken families, inspired youths, and higher powers using people as pawns. It flirts with clichéd tropes but also takes some startling turns. Main characters are assumed White; same-sex marriages and gender equality at the warfront appear to be the norm in this world.
