About this deal

Tamil language Novel Writer, Journalist, Poet & Critic late Ramaswamy Aiyer Krishnamurthy also known as ‘Kalki’. He derived his pen name from the suffixes of his wife name Kalyani and his name Krishnamurthy in Tamil form கல்யாணி and கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி as Kalki (கல்கி). His name also represents “Kalki avatar”, the tenth and last avatar of the Hindu God Vishnu.

The five volumes of the Ponniyin Selvan tell the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I and who takes the title of the novel Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan. Paying heed to Nandhini's request, Karikalan goes to Kadambur. Vandiyathevan and Nambi go to Kadambur where they find a secret passage to enter the palace. Vandiyathevan enters it to go into vettai mandapam. There he sees some aabathudavigal. He opens another exit of the passage that leads to Nandhini's room where he sees Kadhamaaran's sister Manimegalai, who hearing about Vandiyathevan, has fallen in love with him. He then escapes by using Manimegalai. He meets Karikalan and warns him about Nandhini but Karikalan doesn't listen. Aditha Karikalan cannot forget Nandini and is unable to hate her even though he knows her evil plans against him and the Chola dynasty, revealing his pure love for Nandini. Pazhuvettarayar and Nandhini come to Kadambur. Karikalan also reaches Kadambur and is welcomed by the Sambuvarayar family. Periya Pazhuvettarayar talks with Karikalan about the next emperor. Karikalan agrees to crown Maduranthaka as the king but puts in a condition stating that he should be given permission to seize lands towards the north and be the emperor for the places he annexed. The chieftains agree to this and send Pazhuvettatayar to bring Maduranthaka from Tanjavur. The novel was first serialised in the weekly editions of Kalki during the period from 29 October 1950 to 16 May 1954 resulting the total period of development of work be 3 years, 6 months, and 18 days. The following year, Managala Noolagam released the novel in book form. [4] [5] Adaptations [ edit ] Film and television [ edit ]

Every frame Vikram comes in the film is deserving of an applause. Be it the first few scenes of battle ready pitching, or the later scenes of roaring dialogues from atop a horse (as if he was born to be a king, and has lived forever atop a horse), or the later heated discussions; he has given the word "method acting" a new definition. All actors have done their parts exceedingly well, from Jayaram (some comic relief, at last!) to Karthi, Jayam Ravi (subtle smile from atop that elephant - wow), Parthiban (owned the fort, shined in the few scenes like a true General), Prabhu (thundered in his siege), Sarath (his emotional scenes made him the hero of the scenes), Lal (fitting tribute to who could have been Uttamasili's peer), Rahman (just splendid as the sage-like prince, stylish finesse notwithstanding), Trisha (Kundavai, the powerhouse), Prakashraj (nothing less than magnificent throughout), Aishwaraya Rai (A revelation in the Kadambur scenes). I do not have much complaints of what has been changed from the books; the team has told a wonderful fictional story, albeit in a bland and soul-less way. We do not want fantastical action where palm trees are turned to catapults for humans like in Baahubali, yet we at least want some creative and engaging action where we enjoy what we see. Yet, we witness just regular action from any masala movie - which assistant director was responsible for these, I wonder.. I am not even a worthy person to write a review about the greatest historical novel I have ever read in both tamizh and english put together. For those who are curious to know the premise, it is basically about the life of a great chola(kingdom in south india circa. 1000 AD) king 'Raja Raja Chola' before he ascended the throne. It is narrated by a Vandhiya thevan who is also one of the protagonist. The story takes place during the time of political instability in the chola kingdom or to put it precisely the time before they discover about the impending threats to the kingdom. Nandini, a made-up fictional created by Kalki for Ponniyin Selvan, the imaginative novelist explores the myriad mysteries that surround her life story. she is the most beautiful but complex character narrated in this literature.
