About this deal

The applicator is a bit easier to use than some brands due to a substantial ridge for improving grasp. They come recommended by experts, too. Dr. Montes says this is one of the top two brands she recommends (alongside Tampax). With clean hands, unwrap a tampon and tug on the string to make sure the string is firmly attached to the tampon.

What seems to be true is that organic tampons are a more sustainable option than non-organic products. The idea for a tampon which could be inserted without a separate applicator was initiated in 1947 by the German auto engineer Carl Hahn and the lawyer Heinz Mittag. They wanted to introduce tampons to the German market, but the cardboard used for the applicator in the American tampon product Tampax, which at the time dominated the market, was unavailable in post-war Germany. Hahn and Mittag approached Karl Julius Anselmino, director of the Landesfrauenklinik women's hospital in Wuppertal for advice on its design and development. He told them that the job required a woman and recommended the young gynecologist Judith Esser. Esser's finished design went into production in Wuppertal in March 1950. By 2010 the Wuppertal plant had become the largest tampon factory in the world and was exporting to over 30 countries. [2] [3] By creating a tampon without an applicator, Esser-Mittag also created a more environmentally friendly product. [10] See also [ edit ] Judith Esser-Mittag (12 November 1921 – 1 May 2020), [1] commonly known as Judith Esser, was a German gynecologist. Her extensive studies of the female anatomy helped her improve the digital-style tampon.Women’s health expert Jennifer Wider, M.D., points out that this isn’t just a tampon thing, though. “There is a global supply chain issue affecting so many different products including baby formula, parts of automobiles, and even toilet paper,” she says. “Raw materials like cotton and plastic are in high demand—and this is why tampons are in a shortage.” While there are tampon options out there, experts caution against trying to create your own tampon with cotton pads or rolls. “There could be a concern with some retained products in there,” says Christine Greves, M.D., a board-certified ob/gyn at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies. Meaning, some of the cotton could get left inside you where there’s a risk it could lead to an infection.

Wendie Trubow, MD, MBA, IFMCP, board-certified OB-GYN at Five Journeys, says it might take some experimentation and research to decide whether or not organic tampons are the best product for you. She recommends looking for organic products that have a third-party seal and calling the company to ask about their testing methods.

Just a head's up

Once the applicator or outer tube is inside your vagina, use your index or “pointer” finger to push the inner tube (the tube where the removal string is visible) through the outer tube. This pushes the tampon into the vagina. Menstrual Tampons and Pads: Information for Premarket Notification Submissions - Guidance for Industry and FDA Staff, U.S. Food and Drug Administration If you’re not able to insert a tampon after several tries, make an appointment with your health care provider. One reason for this is that you may have been born with a very small opening in your hymen, which prevents you from inserting tampons. This is true in only about 2% of teens, but it could be a problem.
