About this deal

Krum waits at the judges table by the lake, waiting for the second task to begin. Krum attempts to Transfigure himself into a shark for the task, to allow him to breathe underwater. He is partially successful, but it is not a good Transfiguration: he retains his human body, but has the head of a shark. His new teeth are positioned very badly for biting anything smaller than a dolphin, and he is in danger of harming Hermione as he tries to bite at her ropes. Krum is hit on the shoulder by Harry, who hands him a jagged stone; seizing it, Krum begins to cut Hermione free from the statue of the merperson. Once she is free, Krum grabs her around the waist and swims towards the surface of the lake. Krum is the second champion to return with their hostage. He is awarded forty points for the task. Viktor: " I vant to know vot there is between you and Hermy-own-ninny." Harry: " Nothing. We're just friends. She's not my girlfriend and she never has been. It's just that Skeeter woman making things up." Viktor: " Hermy-own-ninny talks about you very often." Harry: " Yeah, because we’re friends ." — Viktor asks Harry Potter about his relationship with Hermione [src]

During Karkaroff's first evening at Hogwarts, he encountered former Auror ' Mad-Eye Moody' (who was actually Barty Crouch Jnr in disguise), who was Hogwarts' new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. It was apparent that Karkaroff and 'Moody' not only knew each other, but had an unpleasant history. Karkaroff unsuccessfully tried to avoid 'Moody' after that first evening. [15] It is likely that Barty Crouch Jnr despised Karkaroff himself because of his betrayal of Lord Voldemort. [16]In April 2014, during the Quidditch World Cup, Krum is described as being "38". 2014 minus 38 is 1976, so Krum must be born by around April 1976. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 7 ( Bagman and Crouch), describes Krum as "only just eighteen" during the final of the Quidditch World Cup. This episode is set on 18 August, 1994 (1994 minus 18 is 1976). Several chapters later, in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 28 ( The Madness of Mr Crouch), in an episode set on 27 May 1995, Krum is again described, in narration, as an eighteen-year-old. As such, one or the other source is estimating as he cannot have been 38 by April 2014 and still be 18 in late May 1995. Viktor entered the maze behind Harry and Cedric, and began searching for the Triwizard Cup. During the task, Barty Crouch Jnr, posing as Alastor Moody by way of the Polyjuice Potion, managed to place the Imperius Curse on Viktor as part of his plot to steer Harry Potter to victory in the Tournament. Under Crouch Jnr's control, he caught up with Cedric and performed the Cruciatus Curse on him. However, he was Stunned by Harry and left unconscious. Cedric, against his better judgement, used his wand to shoot red sparks into the air, allowing him to be rescued from the maze. Krum is leaning against the mantelpiece in the room off the Great Hall when Harry enters. He straightens up when Ludo Bagman introduces Harry as the fourth Triwizard champion; his surly face darkens as he surveys Harry. He is confused when he hears that Harry's name came out of the Goblet of Fire.

Contrary to Crouch's belief, Karkaroff was able to stay alive for a whole year, fleeing to parts unknown, though a possible contribution is that Voldemort was trying to keep a low profile due to the Ministry's denial at the time. Krum is the name of one of the most famous Bulgarian rulers, who ruled in the Ninth century. Krum is, however, not a typical name in modern Bulgaria, being of pagan origin, and is in fact not a surname, but a given name. [18] At the time Bulgarian rulers were known by their first name, as they all rose from the same house/family (Dulu).Dark Arts: At Durmstrang, he learned how to use dark magic (as it was an academic class there), although he was not a Dark wizard. He was forced to use the Cruciatus Curse on Cedric Diggory under the influence of the Imperius Curse, though it is unknown if he was able to use the curse under normal circumstances, as the Imperius Curse could potentially endow a victim with the skills needed to perform a task. He was also able to cast an effective Conjunctivitis Curse against a dragon during the First Task of the Triwizard Tournament. In his younger days, Karkaroff was a Death Eater and acquaintance of Severus Snape. It was reported that Karkaroff helped Antonin Dolohov torture Muggles and non-supporters of Lord Voldemort during the First Wizarding War. He was eventually captured by Auror Alastor Moody and spent a short period of time in Azkaban. [12] He's unbelievable. He's really young too. Only just eighteen or something. He's a genius, you wait until tonight, you'll see." — Ron Weasley on Krum's excellent flying [src] His membership in the Death Eater organisation and implementation — or, at least, continuation — of a policy of refusing to admit Muggle-borns to Durmstrang, indicated that Karkaroff was prejudiced against those of different blood status (though if so he had did not seem to have the level of sadistic, genocidal hatred possessed by other Death Eaters such as Bellatrix Lestrange and Yaxley). Nevertheless, Karkaroff was (at least during his time with the Death Eaters), something of a sadist, as he was noted to have assisted Dolohov in torturing Muggles, and even after he 'reformed' during his headship of Durmstrang, he encouraged an environment where intimidation and fear rule over the school, leading parents to see him as unprincipled and egotistical. Even his warm greeting to Albus Dumbledore when he came to Hogwarts was less proof of a civil nature, and more proof of his ability to play at civility when it suited him. This is supported by his later yelling at Dumbledore after Harry Potter's name came out of the Goblet of Fire, and even spitting at his feet. [14]
