The Day the World Came to Town - Google Books

Now, this is where it gets a bit eerie. Every year for Christmas, my in-laws give us a subscription to the Broadway series – a series of shows that are travelling around the United States straight off Broadway. Usually there is one big anchor show for the subscription (this year it is Hamilton), maybe a classic or two (this year its Cats), but there are always one or two lesser known, more obscure shows. The day after the discussion with my wife about the city in Canada, I was looking through the description of one of the shows I had never heard of: The True Story Behind the Events on 9/11 that Inspired Broadway’s Smash Hit Musical Come from Away, Featuring All New Material from the Author This is was humanity is all about, this is what makes us have faith in society. It is not governments or corporations, but rather the acts of kindness and love that were displayed at a time of great distress and how so few people could touch the lives of so very many passengers. When thirty-eight jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001, due to the closing of United States airspace, the citizens of this small community were called upon to come to the aid of more than six thousand displaced travelers. People in Gander are just like us. Life in Gander is not perfect. The people who live and work there get divorced and struggle with unemployment, failed friendships, alcoholism, and drug abuse…. Nevertheless, given all those human frailities, what happened in Gander is still remarkable. And perhaps the lesson isn’t that these acts of kindness occurred because Gander is a magial place, but rather that the people came together in a time of crisis regardless of their own personal shortcomings. And if that’s the case, then it offers hope that all of us have that ability within us.” ~Author Newfoundland happened to be the closest country outside North America . When airspace was shut down, Canada immediately made sure that US planes would be protected in potentially dangerous airspace by allowing planes to land in Gander, Newfoundland, which would be a total of 38 planes. What were the chances!? I go from asking my wife if she has ever heard about this 9/11 story I last heard about almost a decade ago to finding out we are going to see a musical on it!? I don't believe this movie deserves the criticism several others have posted. I think they did a great job telling the basic story and the low-budget several have complained about makes no difference to me because the tale was told well and the movie looked great in High Definition. The credits say it was shot in St. John's Newfoundland, Hamilton, Ontario and London, England. All the locations were beautifully photographed.

When the townspeople realized what was happening, they immediately welcomed and cared for the passengers and crew, providing places to stay, food to eat, clothes, other necessities and most of all, friendship. All the animals in the cargo holds were also cared for. Prescriptions were obtained for the passengers free of charge, rides were offered to wherever they needed to go, showers in private homes were offered for use, as were telephones, computers and fax machines. Wherever his fellow passengers went, that’s where he would go. However long it took them to get home, that’s how long he’d be gone. He was in this until the end.

Edie Crabtree (14 September 2014). "Under Cover: 9/11 Inspires Uplifting Book of Kindness Amid Tragedy". Newport Beach Independent . Retrieved 25 January 2021. Written with humanity and humility, the book is a must read. This was also part of the inspiration for the Broadway play "Come From Away"- which was great. This play was filmed and shown on television free of charge to anyone during covid, to make a point. DeFede’s rose-hued and sometimes cliché-riddled writing cloaks a complex, interwoven mass of stories and characters presented to prove that out of great tragedy can come great compassion. One can easily forgive DeFede’s feel-good perspective, however, as ultimately, he reveals that there are still people who unselfishly offer help, comfort and hope to those in need simply because they can.

And then . . . as I am finding audiobooks for my vacation a couple of weeks ago, I run across The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland. Well, you know I had to get it! Seems I am destined to revisit this story this year. What makes this book so special is that it is told in the stories of the people—both "the plane people" as they came to be called and the citizens of Gander and surrounding small communities. There is the frantically worried 60-something couple from Brooklyn whose son was a firefighter called to duty in the World Trade Center right after the planes crashed into it, the two families who had just adopted children in Russia and were bringing them home, and the CEO of Hugo Boss who (hilariously) had to buy Walmart underwear, but also learned what it truly meant to be part of "the plane people" community. You might be interested in the musical: Come From Away (based on the events in Gander) currently streaming on AppleTV+. Meet the Author, Jim DeFede
