About this deal

Have you read Sue Hendra’s Supertato books? We love them and this Evil Pea paper plate craft is perfect to make alongside the books. The fourth title in the Number One bestselling series from the award-winning team of Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks. This paper plate craft for The Snail and The Whale is movable so your characters can sail across the ocean, can you see the little snail on the whale’s tail? I really enjoy writing verse, even though it can be fiendishly difficult. I used to memorise poems as a child and it means a lot to me when parents tell me their child can recite one of my books.

I think it’s fair to say that Julia Donaldson is one of my kids favourite authors and I know that the same can be said of an awful lot of other children too. What The Ladybird Heard is one of our favourite stories (as well as the two sequels) and these What The Ladybird Hears activities and crafts are great either as extension activities for the books or just as a simple way to keep your child entertained and having fun. What The Ladybird Heard Activities and Crafts Look at the vocabulary used to describe how the thieves are planning to steal the cow. What other direction words can you think of?

What The Ladybird Heard At The Seaside Activities

Think of some speech bubbles to show what the ladybird might be thinking at each point in the story. As well as ladybird crafts and activities you’ll also fine ones for Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len, the mermaid and her friends in the sea with sharks, crabs, whales and a sealion. Can you make up a song which includes lots of examples of animal sounds? Get some ideas by watching this performance of a song by the author and her husband: Recap on the story of ‘What the Ladybird Heard’– whether at home or in class, read the story again with the children or invite the children to tell you or their parents/siblings the story. Look at the adjectives that are used to describe each animal. How many other adjectives can you think of to describe them? Use the animal posters (see Resources below) and write adjectives on them.

The thieves ‘crept’ into the farm. Think of synonyms which describe how people can move. Can you demonstrate each one (e.g. sprint, crawled, paced).

Great ‘cops and robbers’ appeal . . . perfect for children motivated by the seemingly endless ways in which one might trap the ‘baddies’. Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta. For nursery children – can they make a ladybird using playdoh, junk materials, or draw it with coloured pencils, chalks or paint? What shapes can they see? Talk about circles.
