Drinkers can expect notes of red grapes, dark chocolate, thick peat smoke, iodine, sea spray, cut grass, plums, raspberries, burnt oak, cinnamon spice, toasted almonds, caramel and cloves. If you want a bit more meat on the peaty bones as well as a bit more complexity and deftness, the 10yo is your pick.

However, another bottle caught my eye and I wondered if it might be worth investigating that instead. As the drink goes on, more notes start to boil to the surface: Raspberry jam, salty brine and a slight nail polish lick at the back. And the reference to this story, both in the colour of the distillate (all natural) and in the packaging, is very marked. The overlaid signatures on top of the faint blue age statement which you find on the 70cl bottle really provide some uniqueness and make this bottle truly feel handmade. Creamy mouthfeel packed full of almonds, barley and sweet malt with notes of peppery Ledaig, which give way to black raspberries, sweet vanilla and cocoa interspersed with cinnamon spice and hints of freshly cut grass.

The result is a beautiful combination of Ledaig’s naturally smoky, oily spirit, and the sweet fruitiness of Rioja. We must extend a huge thank you to all the producers that entered the World Whiskies Awards this year, and to our panel of expert judges. Glossing over the obvious likelihood of dysentery, disease, dental problems, and death; what’s not to love? Initially, Sinclair was knocked back, but he tried again, and in 1798 established a distillery on the site. It’s truly delightful to see the Scottish industry growing at a rapid pace and drinkers’ interest in Scotch whisky increasing exponentially. Self-sustaining is certainly a big win and throughout the Whisky community, it seems to be a well-liked Distillery.

The ship was said to be laden with gold and jewels, and Ledaig decided on a Rioja cask to commemorate the Spanish sunken treasure off the Mull shoreline. While slightly underwhelming or possibly too nuanced for me, it is a really nice and friendly Scotch. Visually the bottle could seem a little drab but really does match the feeling of their long history and craftsmanship.
