By the final page, the choppy format and the static characters left me cold to Winslow’s attempt to uncover a dark world that lives just below the surface of where I live.

Conran delivered on the female side, and I got very attached to the five fictitious women she created. All reading for pleasure is escape, whether it be Greek, mathematics, astronomy, Benedetto Croce or The Diary Of The Forgotten Man.I got so addicted to the obtacles the heroines kept facing in this thriller that, by the end, I didn't want them to stop. The panic-stricken women tear back to the jungle, where they learn survival tricks from the ship’s captain. Published in 1987, the attitudes towards women in work, the relative responsibilities of men and women in bringing up children, the idea that a woman should keep herself attractive so her husband won’t ‘stray’ all feel horribly old-fashioned. I realize that some books are supposed to be a simple perspective style, but with all the visual writing and the almost 290 chapters in an only 302 page book, I almost felt like it was meant to be a movie, with each chapter being a new scene.

The detail and development of each character keeps you completely captivated and unable to stop reading.Unfortunately for them the Mexican Mafia wants that client base and they plan on doing anything to get it. She’s also a really funny character with some interesting insights into what is going on in the world she inhabits. There was some interesting plotting but writing was so poorly done that it destroyed any interest I might have had. And ultimately the style is also kind of annoying, and achieves any effects by skipping past those other things that a fuller style achieves: developed character and fully realized scene and so on and so on.
